Pie in the sky?
Nope.

The business model looks sound; nearly 4000 deposits have been placed (Robin Williams among the clientele), enthusiastic investors are locked in, and co-founders Steve Fambro and Chris Anthony have assembled a team that balances Detroit low-volume niche-production experience with California “anything is possible” attitude.

Chief engineer Tom Reichenbach was formerly vehicle engineering manager for both Ford GT and Shelby GT500 programs; and CEO Paul Wilbur has a storied history at Ford, Chrysler and ASC. And Fambro, a biotech engineer and private pilot intrigued by his aircraft’s composite construction, and Anthony, a composites specialist with a background in boat design and fluid dynamics, seemed predestined for this partnership.

Nissan sank into a loss for the fiscal third quarter and forecast its first full-year loss in nearly a decade on Monday, forcing Japan’s third-biggest automaker to slash 20,000 jobs, or 8.5 percent of its global work force.

The global auto industry is in turmoil, and Nissan is no exception. Nissan Motor Co. now expects a 265 billion yen ($2.9 billion) net loss for the fiscal year through March, the first time in nine years it’s tumbling into an annual loss.

The maker of the Z sports car and the March compact reported a net loss of 83.2 billion yen for the October-December period, a reversal from the 132.2 billion yen profit it earned the same period the previous year. That was its first quarterly net loss since it began reporting quarterly earnings in 2003.

French auto maker Citroen is planning for the future with inspiration from the past. Images of the Citroen DS3 leaked onto the Internet earlier this month; the official unveiling is scheduled for the Geneva Motor Show in March. The DS3 is set to be a Mini Cooper rival.

The car offers a European design with a splash of retro 1970s. It’s scheduled to be released in 2010 as the smallest in the new line. The mid-sized DS4 will be released in 2011 as will a luxury model, the DS5.

This video of the DS3 popped up in YouTube. Although the minute and 10 second clip doesn’t show any of the car’s performance, it is cute compact to add to the wish list. Watch the video after the jump.

A car covered with cloth is something you would associate with the Flintstones, not the cutting edge of 21st century automotive design. But BMW’s latest concept car is exactly that - and it can change shape at the touch of a button.

The Gina - which at first glance looks like any other flashy sports car - is encased in fabric instead of metal panels. Open the door and the slinky fabric creases and wrinkles like skin. Turn on the headlights and the covers peel up like giant eyelids - designed to make the sporty roadster more aerodynamic.

And its seamless skin - a single piece of durable fabric - can be morphed at the flick of a switch to suit its owner’s mood, offering an aggressive or classic look.
